Musicophilia: Tales of music and the brain

I sketched out some drawings of brains and music notes and scanned them into my computer. I wanted my brain to have a luminous effect to show it was alive and placed music notes around it.

My next brief is to redesign a dust jacket book cover for a reissue in hardback of Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain by Oliver Sacks. This is a book of compelling tales of people struggling to adapt to different neurological conditions that have fundamentally changed the way we think of our own brains, and of the human experience. In Musicophilia, Oliver Sacks examines the powers of music through the individual experiences of patients, musicians, and everyday people–from a man who is struck by lightning and suddenly inspired to become a pianist at the age of forty-two, to an entire group of children with Williams syndrome who are hypermusical from birth; from people with “amusia,” to whom a symphony sounds like the clattering of pots and pans, to a man whose memory spans only seven seconds for everything but music.

I started by researching book cover designs.

My Digital Montage of a Flower

This is my digital montage of a flower. I used cards from my purse for the petals, copper coins form my purse for the pollen and pencils from my pencil case for the stem and leaves. 

I decided the theme for my digital montage would be flowers and I would use the cards, coins, pencils ect in my bag to make it. I researched flower digital montages.

Digital Monntage

For this brief I have to create a digital montage of a Chimera using the objects from my handbag by photographing them and digitally manipulating them to create my digital montage.


I started by taking photographs of everything that I had in my bag.

Chimera

A chimera is a fusion of two different species into one organism, the mythical term for a Chimera is a monstrous creature with parts from multiple animals.
